Goodnight Irene...and Good Riddance!

HI Everyone! First, let me thank you for all the prayers and thoughts. We made it through! Irene hit us with force (Thankfully with less wind speed than predicted) and all I can say is that I don't think I have ever heard wind like that..... ever.

I thought the sound of the wind might sound like howling or moaning like a winter wind through the bare trees, but no this sounded like the loudest humming one could ever hear. ....giant hornets.... is what describes it. The sound was unrelenting and ever present starting very late on Saturday and lasting all day Sunday.

Video I tried to take hours before Irene hit. It's bad I know, but it'll give you a sense of the humming I wrote about. during Irene it was so much louder.

This one was taken when the wind had died down a bit. you can see the big trees in the distance being whipped around

The trees swayed violently and I tried to get video of the storm in full force, but whenever I felt brave enough to stick the camera out the window the wind would die down. We were very scared that one of our trees would come down, but it held it's own. All around you could hear the cracking of branches. The lights went out and then there was no TV news to drown out the waves of deafening humming. At times when the winds would die down a bit the leaves made the wind sound like ocean waves...very freaky.  Our kids slept down stairs and as my Mom slept in the guest room my husband and I slept in the living room on the couch and love seat. All night we took turns going down to the basement to check for flooding and thank God there was only a small wet spot on the wall.

After the power went out we had a very long day of just waiting around listening to our battery operated radio and later on we ate by candle light and played charades.

Sunday pasta a must no matter what!

The kids never once felt scared and I think that was a blessing. Today as we drove carefully around the neighborhood ( alot of traffic lights were still not working) many stores were  not open and every where you looked there was yellow tape signaling a dangerous spot where a tree was down.
Look at the size of the truck of this tree!

The sign reads Children in Area

We Thanked God that our neighbors and friends are all safe. Our family is Safe and we pray for those that were not so fortunate. My heart breaks for all those who have lost their homes, gotten hurt or who have lost family members to this Hurricane. I pray for them all.

All I can say is that Everyone should have an emergency kit. Ours is just a Tupperware with Flashlight, Battery operated radio. extra batteries,  first aid kit ,water and some canned foods. Oh and don't forget a manual can opener!...I learned this one the hard way! Having the kit handy right there in the corner of the living room was very comforting and convenient especially when the lights went out. They say that using candles is dangerous because of the fire that could be caused by them, and so we were careful to only use them on the kitchen table.

Again, Thank You all for your sweet comments they warmed my heart!

                                           Blessings, Joanne

P.S. My computer is on it's last legs. We are trying hard to save it so I might not be able to post or comment for the next few days while we try to give it new life! :O(

Waiting For Irene

                                                                     source

I know I wrote that I wasn't going to post on the weekends anymore , but right now I can't sleep and I thought maybe if I sat here and wrote it would help.

It is so quiet right now. Everyone in the house is asleep and even the dog came out for only a second to check on me. He too is sleeping soundly now.

Tomorrow the bad weather will begin introducing us to a very bad Hurricane. The real damage will come Sunday when the heart of Irene will make its debut here.

Today was a beautiful day. It almost gave you a false sense of security. I mean how can such a bad storm follow such a beautiful day?

Everyone is trying to remain cool and confident, but just one look at the empty store shelves shares how people are feeling...a bit scared. There's been a mandatory evacuation of the coastline and it makes me wonder how bad is this going to really be? Outside right now it is so eerily quiet. I am waiting. I hate this wait. It worries me to think of flooding and damage and God forbid people getting hurt or worse.

We managed to make an emergency kit. Years ago my Hubby bought a cool little radio that runs on a rechargeable battery and a crank. I am grateful for that because all of those kind of items have long ago left the shelves of stores. We bought as much water as we could and also bought some canned goods ...just in case. We have matches and a first aid kit. Our phones are fully charged and we brought into the garage the swing and hammock from the back yard.

After all that I am still not feeling prepared. I am praying for all those people that are being affected by Irene right now and in the days to come.

There is nothing more to do, so now I will try to calmly listen to this silence.

                                  The quiet before the storm.

Artsy Fartsy Friday~~~Hand Art

This week's art is all about hands. Specifically Art painted on hands. The first video is incredible...you almost forget they are really hands

This video is all about art on hands but with a purpose. Henna tattooing (not permanent) is mostly associated with the Indian culture and it is used as a ceremonial art form for wedding ceremonies. A tradition of drawing intricate designs on hands and feet with henna is used by brides. The Henna is piped on like a baker decorates a cake and I think Its quite beautiful. I have seen The henna done in just one color but this video displays more. As the henna dries it leaves  behind the impression of the design. It will last for weeks. This one is considered to be quite simple in it's design!

Hope you enjoyed this weeks art. Have a blessed weekend!

In Case of Emergency

                                                source

On Tuesday we had a bit of an Earth quake. I was washing my hands in the bathroom when I heard my Husband call me

"Joanne did you feel that?"

"Feel what?" I asked. Then he proceeded to tell me that he thought we had had an Earth Quake. My kids ran down from upstairs to say that they had felt their beds shake and the floor vibrated... We live on the Eastern seaboard and so we felt the result of Virginia's 5.9 Quake. The news came on shortly afterwards to indeed confirm it. It seems that everyone felt it....but me.

I swear I felt nothing! Typical... I have been able to tune out noises like whiny children, complaining spouse, squeaky brakes that alert everyone in a five mile radius that I am coming to a stop, I have slept through horrendous storms, tuned out ignorant bosses and the blah blah blah of a cashier who won't stop talking about her love life.....now this.

But as my Husband went to work that afternoon I started to think about what if....what if it had been stronger than what we felt? what if the Earth quake had hit closer? What's our emergency plan?

           Currently this is it

                                                    source
Not good. Don't we have to have extra water and some canned food to last for weeks?
Do I need to stock up on beef jerky?
If we had to evacuate our home what are the things we absolutely need to take with us?
All valid question and I have no stinkin' clue. I mean I have the essentials, but not all in one place. An Emergency kit will assure that we have everything on hand.
In a few days a Hurricane is suppose to make a visit to my area and the news is asking that we take this one very seriously.
So I have done a bit of research and have a list of sites that may help.

Disaster Supplies Kit - FEMA: Are You Ready?

Build a Kit - Are you prepared?

So tommorrow I am off to buy a big tupperware tub and fill it with Essentials

First on the list...Water
Second...Chocolate

Hey, look in case of emergency I need a kit kat to calm my nerves!

Wednesday's Fashion~~~Lockets

Sorry for the delay on this post. Today, I want to write about lockets. These beauties have been around for hundreds of years and have secretly carried,  ashes, etchings of people , locks of hair, and even poison! Thank goodness now-a-days they are used mostly to carry pictures of loved ones.

My daughter received this beautiful locket from her grandmother a few years ago and she only wears it on special occasions. I asked her If I could use it in my blog and she said
"Yes, but please be careful with it.". She treasures it so much.
I put it around one of my favorite angels who held it safe while I snapped the picture. ..and I could be wrong  but I swear I see a hint of a smile on her face!

Here are some other lockets I found on the net that I thought you might enjoy.

Head In The Clouds

My head is stuck in the clouds she begs me to come down
 says boy quit foolin' around
I told her I love the view from up here, warm sun and wind in my ear
we'll watch the world from above as it turns to the rhythm of love~~~ This is the start of one of my current favorite songs.

The other day my Husband complained that I 'm stuck in la la land. He was looking over bills and I made the mistake of saying..."It's OK Things will work out."
"Your living in a lolly pop world Joanne and I'm here in reality while your head in stuck up in the clouds."

I told him ..."Then why don't you join me?"

That didn't make him smile one bit.

After he said it a few more times I got a bit serious.

I guess I had to remind him where I came from.

I have seen it all.

As a little girl I grew up in the city where I thought every one got mugged.

I thought everyone's home were robbed

I knew the alchoholics that stood on the corner by name.

I watched as friend after friend became prey to drug dealers and become lost.

I rode trains to school and at the tender age that my own daughter is now I knew what it was like to be groped by some disgusting perve.

I know what it's like to come home from Church with my family only to find our apartment ransacked and the little that we had stolen.
I remember my Dad's face and the utter dispair in my Mom's

I have heard the gun shots at night and the seemingly constant sirens of police and ambulances.

on the other hand

I was part of an unbelievable Family that no matter what... stayed together and helped each other.

I was part of a church that cared for it's community and helped whoever needed it. Once even offering a synagogue our church for their services after they suffered a fire.

I witnessed my dad saving plastic bottles for the homeless men so that they would have a way to make money instead of just handing them a couple dollars and hurting their pride.
I saw my mom visit people in the hospital who otherwise had no one to comfort them as they left this world

I saw a church filled with strong women and men who would support each other in the darkest times and the brightest moments of joy.

I learned that by looking into someone eyes it is hard to dismiss them and they you.

I learned that no matter how poor you think you are there is someone more in need

I learned that in the darkest corners of despair God is there...always there waiting for us to reach out to Him.

I looked in my Husband eyes

He could say nothing.  Later we were laughing about something completely silly.

I know what's out there. I know the darkness that lurks there, But I refuse to enter there. I much rather soak in the light and  I find that when I do...I am much better equipped to handle the darkness and to help others climb to join me on this cloud. There are times when I slip and fall through a space like Alice only to be caught by someone who refuses to let me hit the ground...It's nice to have friends living on the cloud next door.

Artsy Fartsy Friday~~~Amazing Art on Water

With all the trouble I have had with water lately (flooded basement). And with more rain expected to continue for the next few days I have decided to post some water art....I guess turning something negative ( that has been a royal pain in my life lately).... into a positive.   This young man must have the steadiest hands in the world to be able to do this. I hope you enjoy this week's art.

So what you do think? I think it is so amazing that he is able to delicately transfer the art onto paper.
I hope you all have a blessed weekend!

Blessings, Joanne
