A few days ago my husband and I started our fall clean up in the front and back yards

as our veggie garden starts to wither the Hubster tried to save whatever he could. He brought in a bowl of these.

                                             Green tomatoes

Then he said "Here Hon."

I answered "Here Hon ...what?"

"We can't waste these, pickle them will ya?"

He wanted me to pickle them....people, the only thing I have ever pickled was myself when I thought Long Island Ice tea was just a fruity (non alcoholic) drink...It wasn't.

"Um hello, do you even know me? I don't know how to pickle anything...and since when do you eat pickled green tomatoes?"

"Joanne, how hard can it be...A does it all the time."

Now don't ya just love to be compared to other people? Especially when they do something well, and you don't?

So for two days the bowl has sat on my table...taunting me...daring me.

I've got to roll up my sleeves........

#1 Learn how to pickle those suckers

#2 Throw them away and buy jars of pickled tomatoes and take off the labels.

#3  Give them to the hubster and tell him if its so darn easy...then he'll have no problem doing it.

                              I'm leaning toward #3.

I found great posts on what to do with green tomatoes. after reading them...I'm might be inspired to try a few suggestions.

  1. There's a green tomato recipe on my blog under the recipe tab.

  2. Good luck Joanne! I wouldn't know where to begin. Keep us posted.

    1. Thanks Alice, I like the idea of frying them. I have always wanted to try that.

  3. I vote for making fried green tomatoes, they are supposed to be delicious and people in the south love them!!! And it beats pickling them!

    1. I'm making them today...wish me luck!

  4. My mother usually cursed the green tomatoes because we had just finished canning about 100 jars of juice and whole tomatoes. A friend brought over something like "chow-chow" which was delicious; peppers, gr. tomatoes, chop. onions. I wish I had gotten the recipe.

    1. That sounds so good! Was it like a salsa?

  5. The saute recipe is more down the lines (vines) of what I was thinking - because of the movie> I'm curious to know how they taste, and how they differ from red/orange tomatoes.

    Enjoy, Joanne.
I'm sorry it took me so long to visit.
    I hope you're well.

  6. Haven't had pickled green tomatoes, but I do love fried green tomatoes! I wrap some of my green ones in newspaper and store in the basement. That way I can enjoy tomatoes for a few more months. Laughing at you getting pickled!

I LOVE comments...I think I'm addicted to them! they are like chips...oooo chips....or chocolate....yum...chocolate. Or like......can ya tell I'm dieting? Please leave me a comment so that I can keep my mind off of snacks!!!
