A Quiet Place

I sit in my car looking out onto the lake near my home. It is quite an interesting lake. It is the topic of ghost stories around Halloween and theories are numerous about the origins of its water and it's exact depth.  I sit here looking out and I feel peace. I come here to clear my mind of all the clutter and sometimes I even write.

I pray here too.

It seems that this is one of the only places my mind is at rest. Usually throughout the day it's pushed to race through "have tos" and "Gotta Dos". Lately, more often then not it's hard to concentrate on one thing at a time; all important and non important things are in a mish mosh and there I am trying to weed out the nonsense..sort of like untangling christmas lights.

So I sit and listen to classical music and  b-r-e-a-t-h-e

I let my thoughts flip quickly through my brain hoping I can somehow slow it down to concentrate like when a hand quickly skims a book or magazine trying hard to find a page to settle on and read.

I breathe deeply and find that moment of clarity where I write poetry in my head or find a spot on the lake that would make a great painting. There is no noise or stress of limited time. I am free of all distractions of the day....

until...

my mom calls with a question about a doctor's appointment.

My Daughter calls to remind me that she has basketball try-outs

and my husband calls to say that the car needs 1,100.00 worth of repairs in order for it to pass inspection.

I click a few pictures.

        I breathe deeply again.

                    Goodbye Peace...checkya later

                                         Hello Life....I'm back.

Do you have a place that you go to once in a while to get away from it all...even if its just for a few minutes?

  1. We all need to "check out" once in a while. I tend to go to my happy place in my mind. One of these days I'll likely get stuck there and then they will lock me up.

I like your retreat. I like to walk around our backyard or gaze out the west-facing window for a few seconds...

  3. That was beautiful and also very familiar...We all need to have a quiet place where the real world can be shut out...at least for a little while. You are very blessed to have such a wonderful view.

  4. What a great post that I can really relate to. The photos are lovely too. Since I have moved here I can find peace and quiet by walking in the cemetery behind my house. It is so restful there.

  6. That is a very pretty lake. We live on a lake and I often find myself gazing and kind of getting stuck there in thought with a peaceful feeling of serenity. They say it is really good for you to have a place to go to even if only in your mind.

  7. But aren't those interruptions wonderful, because they are our loved ones calling us? I know you would never have it any other way! But the bible tells us "Be still and know that I am God". And that can be hard with cell phones, iPads, and such. This place is beautiful!!! I don't really have a place like this to go. I'm sorry about your car! Is it your only car? I haven't seen you in awhile!

  11. I'm glad you got away. We have too many demands sometimes, and I think you have more than your share.

I go to my chair in my study. That is my private place. No one bothers me there. I wish I lived near a lake. I would go there.

  12. Joanne, what a beautiful place to feel close to God and gather thoughts. We all need a bit of solitude now and then. Some people hate being home alone. I love the it and enjoy the quiet moments. Yes, darn we all have to come back to the hustle and bustle of the real world. I'm sure if it was gone for long we'd miss it. Sure is nice to find a bit of peace and quiet now and then.
Thanks for sharing your gorgeous lake!

  13. What a great post. This really speaks to me. Whenever I can, I try to find the time to let my mind rest and soak in whatever bit of simplicity I can squeeze in before I am ambushed by a world that is driven by the the tick of the clock. For me it is the sunset.

    Beautifully written.
