Today I want to write about make up. My Daughter who is 13 does not wear anything but lip gloss because I don't want her to wear make up yet. My friends have voiced their opinions that I am being too strict. Oh well, My kid my rules :O) Quite frankly My daughter doesn't mind and seems satisfied for now to have a huge collection of glosses.
I started wearing make up when I was 15. I went from wearing a little shadow to at 17 looking a bit like Boy George in his Culture club days.

Here is a look back at make-up trends throughout the decades.
In the 1920's it was all about a super smokey eye for flappers. They would also pluck their entire eyebrow only to pencil one in higher and a bit sloped down. Lips were shaped like a cupie doll!

In the 1940's it was all about the ruby red lips and mascara. The eyebrows were no longer pencil thin. Lauren Bacall

The sixties brought us super made up eyes! The lines were thick and sharp, and framed with long false eyelashes. Lipstick was pale which only emphasized the peepers.

The 70's brought the age of the natural look. the objective was to look as if you had no make up at all. Gone was the thick foundation make-up and in was the dewy skin look

The 80's was the age of more is more and make up was no exception. I remember seeing my friend come out of the bathroom in college and me not recognizing her without the layers and layers of make up she usually wore!

Currently it seems that we have adopted a bit of every decade

So which one do you like best? I have to admit that I went nutso in the eighties ! I wore deep purple stage light eyeshadow and winged it out on the corners of my eyes. I also would line the inside of my lower lashes and winged out the liner too! Oh and did I mention the thick foundation and powder? Now I generally go out without make-up, but on occasional will apply eyeliner and a bit of lipstick. Do you wear make-up everyday? Is there something you can't live without? If you do wear make-up do you find that you wear it the same way you wore it years and years ago?

I still use Avon's rich moisture cream at night. I have used this since I was a teenager. I have very few wrinkles. This is a genetic thing though as my mother had hardly a wrinkle when she died at age 84. I wear foundation and lip gloss and that is it. I can't see a thing up close without my glasses so that takes care of eye makeup which I used in my younger days.
ReplyDeleteI like that there's more freedom to do what you want with beauty these days. My hair is very flat so I didn't do well in the 80s. I prefer the natural look because it is less fuss.
ReplyDeleteI wear make-up everyday because at my age I have adopted the philosophy that "every old barn looks better with a fresh coat of paint." :)
ReplyDeleteWow--that's a lot to take in! =D I avoid much makeup, but I usually only go for the eyes. If I feel like I need to look really nice, I'll put on some foundation to "smooth my skin tone." If I really, REALLY want to go all out (which I haven't done in years...) I'll put on a touch of lip liner with my Blistex. ;-)
ReplyDeleteWhen I was young, I spent hours applying makeup!!! I liked the London Mary Quant look! But now I never wear any, I don't have the time and it rubs off on my collars! Sometimes I wear lipstick or paint my nails, that's it. Freedom!!!
ReplyDeleteBoy George I'm LOVING it!!
ReplyDeleteI'm loving the 20's what a beautiful time for fashion also. I so don't miss the 80's and my crazy do's and make up ... lol
I like to change it up depending on the mood and where I'm going: sometimes just foundation, sometimes smokey eyes and pale lips, sometimes bright red lipstick. I feel like today you can do anything!
ReplyDeleteMakeup for work and going out. Generally weekends and when I am on holidays I only wear a moisturiser.
ReplyDeleteI do the works when I do put it on. Foundation, powder, eyeshadow etc
I suffered through the 80s in high school and did the big hair and big make-up thing:)
ReplyDeleteToday, I try to keep it as natural as possible, but do wear a little.
I was laughting at Retired English Teacher's comment. I have to agree. I ware make up everyday. I feel complete and good once it is on. I guess I have the look of today and I try not to overdo anything.
